Vip operator among first in region to trial VoLTE services on top of NFV technology

09/12/2014

Stronger capabilities at the radio interface and mobile devices will lead to growing adoption of VoLTE which increases the diversity of the core network. Telecom operators are pressed to accelerate investments in order to provide the means for these services. Vip operator is among the first telcos in the region to take the lead in this matter by demonstrating how to make VoLTE possible by combining LTE technology and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solution of Mavenir.

As VoLTE (Voice over LTE) require a versatile, scalable and uniform Core Network in order to provide future services, today, proof of concept was concluded for VoLTE calling exclusively via a fully virtualized solution based on NFV (Network Functions Virtualization). This achievement was greeted and acknowledged by Günther Ottendorfer, CTO of Telekom Austria Group, on today's official demonstration of NFV and Vip operator's  technological progress. The presentation showed that in the coming years customers will receive services based on virtualized and scalable technology, thereby providing utilization of the customer equipment's and networks' full potential in a seamless, optimal experience.

The basis of the VoLTE Demo lies in Network Functions Virtualization. NFV represents a new technological trend which consists in standardizing performance of different network elements on standard commercial of the shelf (COTS) hardware systems and storage devices. Network functions are software - created and can be activated from any part of the network. NFV replaces the usage of specific purpose-built equipment from focused Telecom Equipment Manufacturers and is opening up to usage of the same hardware as is being used for IT systems. This means that Vip operator will be able to configure, deploy and operate services with greater ease which increases customer focus. In the future it would provide customers with unique voice experience.

> For Telekom Austria Group NFV technology is a paradigm shift which will have a major impact on the telecommunication industry globally within the next years. The traditional IT silo world will no longer exist and the Telecom landscape will be shaped differently. I am proud that the Group is among the first operators worldwide to set these trends, says Guenther Ottendorfer, CTO, Telekom Austria Group.

Today, Vip operator also showed the enlargement of its 4G LTE network which now has improved coverage Skopje, Kumanovo, Shtip, Ohrid, Strumica, Bitola, Prilep, Tetovo, Gostivar, Veles, Kavadarci, Kochani, Strugaand continues to be the 4G LTE network with largest coverage in the Republic of Macedonia.

> The advanced LTE network with VoLTE capable devices is a prerequisite to enable the technology trials and in future to offer the services to our customers. We are and we will remain committed towards bringing the latest technologies to our customers, constantly investing in improvements of our services and systems. I’m very pleased that we are among first operators in region to successfully test VoLTE, thus contributing to the innovation path of Telekom Austria Group, stated Nikola Ljushev, CEO and CTO Vip operator.

VoLTE trial was committed by combining Vip's LTE technology and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solution of Mavenir.
